After Plymouth’s city centre controversy in 2023, it is uplifting to see the new Armada Way, which is part of the city’s regeneration scheme. Now free of protective barriers and contractors. Visitors can enjoy the innovative and remarkable attraction where wildlife can thrive again.
On a recent shopping excursion to buy wedding anniversary gifts for each other, Mr Word Loft and I couldn’t resist going for a wander up and down the famous site. Hordes of people were appreciating the benefits of the stretch, some relaxed in the amphitheatre, and children dabbled their toes in the rill’s sparkling ripples as it tumbled down its granite channel through the middle of the bustling boulevard.
Contemporary triangular-shaped reed beds are striking and provide a natural habitat, the plants filtering rain for reuse in the rill and watering surrounding vegetation. Some of which are wildflowers, which I adore. The natural borders are refreshing to see in the heart of an urban environment – perfect for attracting bees and other pollinators, too. St Luke’s Hospice Guiding Lights Lighthouses are an art trail of forty sculptures situated around Plymouth’s lively streets and waterfront, and Wildflower Wonder by Amy Wormald’s floral-illustrated creation sits idyllically within the countryside gardens.
The toddler zone oozes a desert energy with its sandy hues. Inside the fenced area, there are swings, huts and a slide. Other spots feature adventure play structures in the form of a galleon and a metallic configuration. There are treehouses and a sensory grassland for those who prefer to experiment. The water jets looked popular; no wonder with our recent hot, humid weather. But after an hour’s mooch, we decided to proceed with our original plan and ended up buying all sorts of goodies.
