The dunes gleamed, undulating, the bedforms rippled and resplendent. I had glimpsed them from another vantage point on my first excursion at Maspalomas de Playa across the nature reserve and lagoon, but from the Playa de Ingles side, their vastness is outstanding.
It was strange stepping out onto Gran Canaria’s famous sand hills through the doorway of an outdoor shopping complex. With the sand hot beneath my feet, I noticed a walkway edging them, it was higher up with a premium view.
There are dedicated trails across the dunes, but it was exceedingly hot, so Mr Word Loft and I took the mentioned route.
Bungalows along the way have the most unusual outlook taking in desert and the Atlantic Ocean, except for an area near the end of the parade where the dunes are so high, that the panorama has been hidden because they are so close. When the properties were purchased, this probably wasn’t the case, but over the years, weather has reformed the land protected by the Canarian government. The arid region changes constantly between two and five metres annually. Nature cannot be argued with, but maybe the dunes will transform into a shape where residents can see more of the scenery again in the future.
I’m writing a novel set in the North African desert, so the experience was useful, and one I’ll never forget.
Until next time,
